Inpatient Tower

The Combined Internal Medicine + Pediatric Residency is a four year program designed to prepare the resident for certification by both the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Internal Medicine. There are six resident positions for each of the four years. The resident rotates between pediatrics and medicine every three months in the first two years then every two months in the third year, and every month in the fourth year. The curriculum is designed to build a solid Medicine foundation and a solid Pediatrics foundation in the first two years then spend the last two years integrating them into a strong Med+Peds foundation:

DUTY HOURS

The schedule provides for 4 days per 28 days free from patient care duties.

During the internal medicine inpatient clerkship months, interns work from 6 AM - 5:30 PM and residents from 7 AM to 5:30 PM. All house officers receive, on average, one weekend day off per week.

  1. Residents must not be scheduled for more than 80 hours of duty per week, averaged over a four-week period.
  2. Residents must be provided one day in seven free from all patient care responsibilities, averaged over a four-week period.
  3. Call must be no more frequently than every third night averaged over a four-week period.
  4. There must be a 24-hour limit on on-call duty, with an added period of up to 6 hours for continuity and transfer of care, educational debriefing and didactic activities; no new patients may be assigned after 24 hours.
  5. A 10-hour minimum rest period should be provided between duty periods.
  6. When residents take call from home and are called into the hospital, the time spent in the hospital will be counted toward the weekly hour limit.
