Combined Med+Peds Clinic

Residents see patients of all ages in the combined Med+Peds Clinic. Before afternoon clinic the residents participate in an integrated Med+Peds Outpatient Primary Care Curriculum. The Med+Peds Clinic not only allows us to see families (parents, children, and grandparents), but it also allows us to see patients during the transition from pediatric sub-specialty care to adult sub-specialty care and long afterwards. For this reason, we see many interesting conditions and help to maintain their continuity of care as they transition their care from pediatric to adult neurology, gastroenterology, hematology, endocrinology, cardiology, and other sub-specialties.

In addition, we are fortunate to have the opportunity follow our patients from the wards to the clinic if they do not already have primary care or if they wish to change their provider. Residents see patients in Med+Peds primary care continuity clinic approximately 40 half days per year. During Pediatric months, the resident is assigned to continuity clinic one half-day per week on average, with more clinic during lighter rotations like Ambulatory and Electives and less clinic during more demanding rotations such as ICU or Wards months. During Medicine months, the residents are assigned to their continuity clinic during the +1 week. Our medicine schedule follows the categorical 3+1 format in which residents have 3 weeks of the rotation such as Wards or Elective followed by a week of outpatient clinics.

Ambulatory Training

The resident is assigned to ambulatory training for approximately a third of their training. Ambulatory training is split between Medicine and Pediatrics. Med+Peds residents also participate in a the Med+Peds Rotation (2 weeks of combined Medicine and Pediatrics ambulatory experiences), where they visit pediatric sub-specialty and adult sub-specialty clinics to learn valuable lessons from pediatric and adult neurology, gastroenterology, hematology, endocrinology, cardiology, and other sub-specialties.

In addition to sub-specialty clinics, residents staff our Adult Congenital Heart Clinic, Adult/Adolescent Type I Diabetes Clinic, Adult/Adolescent Rheumatology Clinic, Adult/Adolescent Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, and Med+Peds Continuity Clinic during the Med+Peds Rotation.

We offer the Med+Peds Rotation as an elective to medical students, which provides our residents another opportunity to mentor and teach.
