Community Outreach and Advocacy

One of the first things which strikes people about our medical center is our devotion to the underserved population of L.A. County. As firmly as it is inscribed at the entrance of Old General, our commitment to community service is embedded in our daily life as physicians and members of the community. We are also fortunate to have it built into our resident schedules, allowing us to consistently remain engaged with our community. Below are brief highlights of some of our community partners and options for community service during your Y or +1 weeks.
Woodrow Wilson High School where for the last few years we have been working with Wilson Students through our resident-led community health initiative. Wednesday afternoons, residents are assigned to work the health center at Wilson HS and provide preventative care, sports physicals, and guidance on adolescent health concerns. We also lead a Health Discussion for the parent volunteers and are working to start a school based clinic.

Homeboy Industries provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. We participate in their Baby Talk session where we interact with their members and their children. We help answer questions about child care, developmental questions, and help parents engage and play with their children. We also host a "Questions for Doc" session after Wednesday morning meeting where members are encouraged to ask questions about diet, medication, and health as well as give our residents guidance on how to be the best community doctor they can be.
