LA General Medical Center

Founded in 1878 as Los Angeles County Hospital, LA General has served as a cornerstone of healthcare for vulnerable populations for nearly 150 years. The Level I Trauma center and safety net medical center provides critical access to health services for the region’s medically underserved.

LAG provides a full spectrum of emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services. These include medical, surgical, obstetrical, gynecological, and intensive care services as well as psychiatric services and emergency/trauma services for all ages from neonatal to elderly patients.

Staffed by faculty of the Keck School of Medicine, USC physicians help provide patient care, lead clinical research, and oversee the training of more than 900 medical residents, over 60 ACGME accredited training programs, and 600 medical students at the medical center.

As one of the busiest public hospitals in the western United States, LA General Medical Center records nearly 50,000 inpatient discharges, 200,000 emergency department visits, and 1 million ambulatory care visits each year. LAG is the largest single provider of health care in L.A. County, and treats more than 28 percent of trauma victims in the region. In addition, LA General operates one of only three burn centers in the County and one of the few Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Southern California.

Faculty lead the care for half of HIV/AIDS patients and sickle cell anemia patients in Southern California and provide special clinical care programs for patients with a number of diseases including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and others.
