Med + Peds at LA General

The LA General / USC Medicine - Pediatrics Residency Program is a 4 year training program dedicated to preparing resident physicians to sit for both the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics boards while also helping resident gain skills to practice in any setting.

Our program is grounded in a strong mission of service, health equity, and advocacy for underserved communities. As one of the nation's largest public safety net hospitals, we train physicians to care for patient's across the lifespan while addressing the social, structural, and economic factors that influence a person's health.

Here at LA General, service is not an extracurricular activity. It is woven into our 4 years of training and reflected in our amazing faculty and staff who remain committed to providing high quality care to all patients regardless of their background, immigration status, or ability to pay. Residents are privileged to care for a large, diverse, majority Spanish speaking patient population as they gain firsthand experience in caring for medically complex, marginalized communities.

Specific highlights of our program include the opportunity to provide care through initiatives like the Woodrow Wilson High School clinic, our street medicine outreach program, pediatric same-day clinic, and collaborations with community organizations including Homeboy Industries. Another unique aspect of our program is that we switch between medicine and pediatrics every 4 weeks allowing for better integration into both programs and more practice with "the switch."

In addition to the exceptional clinical training at LA general, residents benefit from the ability to rotate across the USC medical system, including Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Keck Hospital USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. This unique combination of safety net, tertiary referral, and academic medical center training provides both breadth and depth of experience to our residents and prepares them to become leaders in whatever field they may choose - whether that is primary care, hospital medicine, subspecialty care, public health, or community advocacy.
